Chasing Avocet
| 17 imagesLast week, while out on a soggy sand spit, I managed to capture a number of Avocets fighting over ground, food, or mates. I managed to make a few sequences of photos of one of the chases, which lasted for a short while, and seemingly scared the bajeezuz out of a Willet at the end (last few frames…he’s leaning and peering rather alarmedly at the Avocets as they race by! :D)
These are great. I do believe avocets are my new favorites. Thanks.
Thanks & welcome! π Avocets are certainly interesting birds. They rarely leave you bored when watching. Although, generally speaking, I think that is largely true of most shorebirds…they are constantly on the move, each species has its own nuances, each bird its own habits. I’m never bored when watching shorebirds. Other birds are a little more patterned and a little less interesting on a continuous basis…ducks, waders, etc.
Amazing – if you click through the slides quickly – you can see that they are almost in sync with each other like the Rockets !! Great photos
π You can usually tell when a chase is about to happen…there is usually a little bit of posturing a moment before it starts, so the one being chased usually has a moments notice to either get movin or put up a fight!
Haha… he’s like “Dude, what’s going on!”
LOL! Yeah, the Willet was rather bewildered for a moment there! Sadly, he ended up getting chased himself a short while later, by the same Avocet! (I was switching cards at the time…when I burst through these long sequences, my card space fills up fast…so no shots of the Avocet vs. Willet sequence π₯ ).
