Nesting Cormorants at Duck Lake
| 10 imagesFor those of you who have read my blog for the last couple of months, you’ll know that when I visited Duck Lake a couple months ago, I discovered my lens had been damaged. Every shot out of about 32 gigs worth was soft at full size. I had hoped to print some of those shots, however the lack of detail was too severe. Thanks to some advanced tools from Nik and Topaz, and some hefty processing, I’ve managed to salvage a number of those photos. Furthermore, scaled down to the appropriate size for this site (about 1/4 to 1/5th the original image size), the detail that is present looks pretty good. Spot highlights look a little odd, but aside from that, here are a bunch of photos of the nesting Double-crested Cormorants. They spent the whole day picking up sticks, washing them off in the pond, then flying up to reinforce their nests. It was an interesting sight, and one thing that really stood out all day was that not a single cormorant stopped to feed…
A lot of work, but still kind of a messy nest construction. I love their blue eyes.
Yes, their eyes are amazing! I tried really hard to get as close as I could…my lens just couldn’t resolve the kind of detail I know is there…close up in full detail, their eyes are even more amazing than you see here. Well, with a 600mm lens, I should be able to get much better shots next year! (Here’s to hoping!)
Amazing photos of bird behavior
Thank you! 🙂 I was pretty happy to capture nesting behavior. It was very interesting to see them wash each and every twig off before taking it up to the nest.
Hey Jon! Interestingly I have seen hundreds of cormorants, which are quite common here, but I have never seen one in a nest! Thanks for sharing
Welcome! 🙂
