A Cat’Field Full of Blackbirds

One of the sights I love during the winter evenings are the fields of cattails full of red-wing blackbirds. During the day it’s often a chorus of squaking and squabbling. When evening settles, the noise disappears, and a strange choreography begins. Every male deftly vies for the best cattails, flitting about, defending their chosen perch…nothing but the wings, the wind, and the dance. It’s kind of serene. (Makes you wonder where all the females are… ;))
