This past week, I came across a group of six Western Grebe hanging out at the Cottonwood Creek wetland. Grebe usually hang out near the southeastern sandspit on the lake, but I have to say, I like the environment at Cottonwood better. While photographing these little beauties, I noticed one of them was just lazily floating around, and seemed to be a little asleep. Fully asleep waterfowl tend to stuff their bill under one wing…so I think this guy was just dozing. It was a pretty lazy day, rather warm (the highest temperatures we’ve seen this year, peaking at ~88ºF).

Wonderful! I have never seen these.
Thanks! Both Western and Clarks Grebe are very much “western” in region. They have a fairly small region overall, but I’m glad I was able to show them to you. In appearance, these are not the most beautiful of Grebe…Horned, Eared, and Red-necked are all a bit more beautiful in my book. The Western Grebe are known for their amazing water dance, though (something I’ve yet to see in person or photograph.)
Beautiful bird, beautiful photo!
Thanks Sue! They really are beautiful…Grebes are such elegant birds.
