Great Blue Heron: Catch of the Day
| 4 imagesThis series, of a Great Blue Heron eating a fish, was taken under some fairly extreme lighting. A storm had rolled in, the sky was almost black, and I had to push ISO to 3200 to get these shots. Not the greatest of photography, however I thought the series was interesting.
Neat action photos! Amazing they don’t lose the fish when they toss it up in the air to get to go down head first.
Aye, its really interesting watching these birds guzzle down a fish. 🙂 You wouldn’t imagine, given the diminutive size of their necks, that they could swallow some of the fish they catch whole. This little fish is small compared to some of the huge catches I’ve seen both GBH and Snowy Egret gulp down. Sometimes the fish are so large, they will spend minutes trying to figure out how to arrange it, toss it, and catch it to get it down. 😀 Sometimes, they do lose the fish, too…but it seems to be a fairly rare occurrence…only the slimiest and feistiest of fish ever make it free.
